Yet another spinoff of The Conjuring franchise has been put into development, expanding horror director James Wan’s The Conjuring cinematic universe!

We already had Annabelle in 2014, the upcoming Annabelle sequel, and next year’s Conjuring 2 prequel The Nun, and now another creepy creature from The Conjuring 2 is getting its own movie. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, reporting that a Crooked Man spinoff from The Conjuring 2 is in the works at Warner Bros. Pictures/New Line Cinema. Mike Van Waes, who sold a Wizard of Oz-themed horror pitch to New Line earlier this year, will pen the screenplay from a story by series mastermind James Wan.

A few weeks ago, Safran let slip that a Crooked Man spinoff was being considered by the studio, saying (via JoBlo):

“I think there’s something fascinating in the Crooked Man. Maybe tonally he’s not as grounded as the Conjuring itself is and maybe that’s why some people felt it wasn’t what they were looking for in the Conjuring but I suspect a movie with him would be really really cool.”

The Crooked Man character made his first appearance in The Conjuring 2, the Wan-helmed horror hit released in June 2016. This character is based on an English nursery rhyme: "There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile/ He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile/ He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse/ And they all lived together in a little crooked house." The tall, slender character has had plenty of pop culture appearances over the years. The poem was recited in the third season of TV series Fargo and a film titled The Crooked Man was released earlier this year.

No release date is yet set, but if we’re following the format of one Conjuring movie per year, The Crooked Man will likely hit theaters in 2019. Annabelle: Creation is due out on August 11, 2017 and The Nun is filming now for a July 13, 2018 release.
